i have a very crappy filter on my 10 gallon that is constantly cutting out(aqua tech 5-15)so tomorrow i am gonna run to walmart and get an aqua tech 10-20(i in tend to leave the old filter in so it can cycle the new filter)do you think that the 10-20 gallon aqua tech filter will be to much for my 10 gallon to handle?i have a few small cherry shrimp,and a betta,and a 0.5 inch siamese algae eater in it(growing him out)do you think they will be harmed in anyway by the filter,like the intake to strong and the fish?/shrimp getting stuck to the filter intake tube?

Not too sure about the flow rate (I don't think it would be too bad) but you could definitely help to prevent squishing your shrimps by covering the filter inlet with a piece of nylon stocking/tights/pantyhose (I'm guessing you may be across the pond from me)

Yep - as Mr. Moose says, it's the flow rate that may be the problem as Bettas really don't like a lot of water movement. If the filter comes with a spray-bar then this can be angled to keep the flow slow.

Could be a good idea to run it in a bucket of water while you experiment on various ways of managing the flow before adding it to your tank.

ok well....they didn't have the filter so i had to get another filter.i wanted a filter bigger that the tank before i even went to walmart.so i looked at the filters that are for tanks bigger than 10 gallons.so i looked and there was only 2 filter.they were aqua tech30-60(WAYYYY to big)and a whisper 10-30.so i was not sure if it would fit so i found a 10 gallon starter that had been opened.put it on the floor opened it and hung the filter on the side.it had just a bit of space between the gravel and the filter bottom.so i got the filter.so i have just set the filter up(so quiet!!!)the filter is a bit strong and it is sucking up all the crap from the bottom and is just throwing it around the tank.my gravel is a few inches high so i get about an inch thick piece of petrified drift wood and i sat the filter on it.

i dont rate them at all to be honest i would have gone for
a fluval u1 or u2 filter

I've found a lot of Americans like these hang-on-back filters rather than internals.

Brian - is it because HOBs give you more space inside the tank of because more shops stock HOBs compared to internals like the Fluval U range that biffster mentioned?

got nothing against HOB filters i just dont like tetras attempt at it
i used HOB filter on marine tank for over a year with good results
its just that tetra's hob filter sits in the tank not the out side like a
proper HOB filter it defeats the object a bit i have been looking at these
for a small tank i am thinking of setting up well worth the investment

well that is the filter i grew up on.whenever i got a starter kit they always had them in the kit.even when i built my 29 gallon tank from scratch i just went with what i was accustomed to.but i am ranging out of them just a bit with the whisper.

well it is not really that bad all that is in the water is a little tube which you can easily hide.but i must admit i am a little intimidated by that filter.it looks to hard to set up and keep running properly.

externals are so easy mine only get cleaned ever 12 to 18 months

really easy just like any other filter all media
and sponges cleaned in old tank water that was
siphoned off during tank maintenance we have
seven externals running and our lass can do one in 45 mins to
an hour mind you mine are big filters most of them are eheim
best filter money can buy

hmm i thought it would be harder than that......so all i would have to do would be swish it in the tank water every once in a while?
