Type of ammonia for cycling

Hi - just bought some Homecare Essentials Ammonia from our local DIY store (the only type  could get locally) so my husband can start cycling his new tank.

Has anyone used this before ... ??
I presume it's pure as it just says 5% ammonia on the bottle and lists no other ingredients ..... but wanted to check.
Tried ringing the company but they are closed for the weekend.

thanks

Is it this?
You need one that contains water, ammonia or ammonium hydroxide and nothing else. Since it doesn't say anything, shake the bottle, take the lid off, hold your breath and look into the bottle. If it has foamed, it contains surfactants. If there are just big bubbles which burst quickly (like water does) it is safe. It might be easier to decant some into a see-through bottle to shake. Don't breathe the fumes!

Since it is 5%, if it doesn't foam you need 0.6ml per 10 litres to get 3ppm. Add some, wait half an hour or so for it to mix in, then test the ammonia level to check the ppm.

yes that's the one ...tried the shake test and it seems a little foamy to me.

might wait and get something else on Monday from somewhere else.
Any advice on shops that sell the stuff in the UK?

Some branches of Homebase sell it, in the general cleaning section. Some shops sell Jeyes Kleen Off Household Ammonia which is fine and is supposed to be 9.5% (I have that and I emailed the company to ask). Failing those, Amazon and eBay sell ammonia.

Aha Biffster, you are from Teesside! Well, I assume you are if you're going to The Range in Stockton. I live in Yarm.

I called in at the new Teesside Koi & Aquatics the other day. Unless they get a lot more fish I won't be going there again. Very few tanks of 'ordinary' fish, and very ordinary at that. Over half the tanks were Rift Lake Cichlids.

Paddock Farm used to be my favourite shop but since they changed hands I'm not sure. But I recently found Mark was working at Aquatic Finatic just south of Northallerton, so I'll be going there quite a lot in future.

Mark might well have bought Aq Fin I just noticed the other people there were the same that were always there. I have bough a few things from Paddock Farm in the last few years, good quality fish too.

The problem with getting to Paddock Farm is that I don't drive and am reliant on my fish-hating husband to get to these places.........
