The benefits of 2 filters

When putting the fishes' breakfast in the tank this morning, I noticed that one of the filters had completely ceased to work. It turned out that the filter media was the problem - I'd wrapped some filter wool around the usual sponge during last Fri's water change, as I'd read of its benefits for catching small particles. The filter was then fine for 4.5+ days until some time last night between feeding the fishes' dinner (when it was functioning fine) and this morning when feeding breakfast (when it wasn't functioning fine).

Thankfully, there is a second filter in the tank which was doing its job, and obviously I'll be keeping an eye on ammonia levels as a precaution. Definitely a benefit of having 2 filters, in situations such as this where one stops working, as well as having one which can be easily removed for use in a QT if required.

It's also useful if you want an "over filtered" tank but don't want too high a flow rate, two smaller ones will cause much less movement than one big one.
