Whichever is easiest. It might be easier to do it the day before as you'll need to get the temp right for the fish.

Hey AM!
I've been following your thread and feeling you pain!!  I was actually saying (to the computer - need to get out more! :P) "Get some fish!!" at about the time Sue suggested it!!!!

One thing I wanted to suggest - and it may be a pointless observation- if you get girlie platys choose thin ones!!! They will probably be pregnant anyway but the thinner they are the less pregnant they are so you won't end up with babies as soon, which won't help you tank readings!!!! Also make sure you ask the person catching your fish to be certain they are the sex you want. Do you know how to sex a platy??

Anyway, good luck!!

You'll find there are some shop workers who don't have a clue how to sex platies (or any livebearer for that matter). Make sure you know how and keep an eagle eye on the fish going into the bag.

And if you don't know, now is the time to ask  ;D

I will re read up (is it anal fin shape)? the shop i'm buying from are a very experienced and longstanding firm (if a tad arrogant)  and i think would correct any errors as they have been helpfull in the past.

Yes, it's the anal fin. Males have a rod shaped anal fin, called a gonopodium; females have a normal fan shaped fin.

Once you know how to sex them it's easy to tell!!!  you'll probably be ok with all boys. I had four males in my tank and as long as they have their own space they are ok. my boys were in a small tank so I did get a fair amount of chasing and pecking order sorting but this is normal for fishies in a tank as they can't ever get fully away from each other. Just make sure no one gets bullied more than anyone else. If you do have problems you'll just have to get a bigger tank!!!!!!  ;)

Ah the "bigger tank" always in ones thoughts, even when you don't have small one up and running lol. I do have a small 40lt tank that i intend keeping as a quaranteen tank, so i guess that would do as an emergency tank too : ) Thanks fishcake

Well Day 40 dosed the tank with Ammonia up to 2.00ppm yesterday, and it's still 2.00ppm today, so not being exactly gobbled up is it : ( ah well test again tomorrow.

Tank is constant 30 degrees Fiona, well as i may be putting fish in next week, (would rather have known tank was cycled and ready) i am checking regularly, if Ammonia isn't going anywhere its a worry as i gather cycle isn't done till you get 0 Ammonia reading?.  but we will see today, may do full lot of tests tomorrow. If my Nitrite did spike on day 31 -33 and my Ammonia was at it's lowest then maybe that was nearly end of cycle?  just hope i do have bacteria, for the fishes sake  :fishy1:

Hi guys, been struck down by a sickness bug, but you don't want to know about that! Lol.
Aquamaid you are quite right there's lots of ups and downs. If you can make head or tail of it, and if it comes out the right way up here is your graph up until Wednesday (ish)

Lol, does it adequately reflect the rollercoaster of emotions of your fish less cycle?

Hi Fiona, yes maybe, they sure are slow little munchers though. I'm doing my 90% water change tomorrow, and popping two Platy in on Wednesday, wish us all luck  :fishy1:

Day 45 Ammo = 0 Nit = 0   Bought two Platy's   (want to woo hoo! but not till i know if they survive)

If my newly installed fish were to show signs of distress (not sure what that might be)? would it help to tranfer them to another recently established tank (sisters) or would it be too late (assuming she would allow em in)
