I had a 2 hour power cut yesterday.  Can someone advise me as to what effect this would have on my filter.  I was going to buy some fish today, but I have put it off till next week.  Is this sound?

There's an article on Power Cuts here:

Though I'm not sure if anyone would provide any different advice?

For just 2 hours, check your stats and if they're OK you can get your fish. We had a power cut for 8 hours last spring (substation work, we were warned in advance). I monitored my stats for a few days after and didn't see the hint of a reading above zero. It has always been said that out filter bacteria die off at a rate of 10% a day if deprived of oxygen and food, but it is now thought the die-off rate is nothing like that much. With internals it's less than with externals and the media is in closer contact with the water - the food/oxygen doesn't have to diffuse down any tubes.

Now if I had only read that yesterday... wait, I didn't have any power yesterday and the battery on my laptop doesn't work... wait, my router was down so I would have to dial-up the internet; something I haven't done on Linux before... wait, the power cut was so widespread, the telephone exchange was dead too!

Luckily, my cooker is gas so I was able to maintain my intravenous caffeine levels.

I got bored and decided to shop... That's really bored... However, the shops didn't have any power either.  I couldn't even get inside Tesco, the doors are electrically operated.

How dependent we become on electricity on tap so to speak!
