Peat Moss

In preparation for my new Shrimp Tank venture, I've read that most shrimp tend to do best in slightly acidic water, i.e. pH lower than 7. This isn't a problem in my main tank as the pH is generally in the range of 6.5-7.0. I think this is primarily due to a large piece of bog wood I have which seems to be keeping the pH that bit lower. However, in the small tank I've set up for the shrimp there is no bog wood and the pH seems to be sitting at 7.5 (about the same as my tap water).

Whilst the difference isn't huge I would like to try and lower it slightly and I'm currently thinking that the addition of a small amount of peat moss within the filter could be the best way to go - as such, does anyone have any recommendations as to the best place to get some?

Don't forget that shrimps need a reasonable GH to be able to moult properly. Don't overdo the peat and remove too much GH. Natalia, who helped me with my shrimp problem last year, reckoned that my GH of 6 german deg was fine.

Thanks Sue - I think the GH of my water would also benefit from being lowered as well. My local water co. gives an average GH in my area of 10-11 which is fairly hard. Again I think this is being reduced within my main tank (I have Amano shrimp in there already and they're doing really well) but ironically it looks like I'll need to intervene in the tank I'm setting up specifically for shrimp!

Nope. I've been tempted, so I'll be following your trial closely.

Having said that, the OT in her usual approach of obvious logic which I didn't think of, has suggested just getting a piece of small bogwood seeing as that seems to do the trick in the big tank. Hmm......  ???

It's a good argument! Oh, and just realised that I put 'OT' earlier and actually meant to put OH, as in, other-half, not occupational therapist!  ::)
