s it says above, when moving tank ornaments around or cleaning filter there is always some debris that ends up floating around until the filter catches it. Internal filters always leave pollutants, water drains out,  when  removing  them from the tank to clean the sponges.
Is this harmful to the fish, I've often wondered.

I don't think so. I've been keeping fish for almost 20 years and I've never noticed the fish coming to any harm. If you are careful when moving decor most of the debris says low till it can be siphoned up. I agree about internal filters which is why I lift mine carefully and have a bucket held by the rim of the tank to minimise any mess.

I use a 2 litre jug to stick the filter in before I move it around too much
