If you want any advise on planting the tank let me know

Will do. Think the rainbowfish are out at they need harder water.

I have hard water, and I think forktail rainbows are lovely looking fish.
I'd keep them but I can't get over the short lifespan. Even though it is natural, I'd still be bothered by fish loss.

Hi @Sue

Odd question. My 200 litre tank which had no mature media and no plants in it is telling me today that it is cycled after 3 days of adding 3ppm ammonia. Seeing my 125l took longer with mature media, i am slighlty concerned about the length of time difference. Have double checked both readings and both 0ppm after 24 hours.

Am i worrying unneccessarily?

I think I would be wondering what was happening in this case too  :)

Since both readings are zero, add another 3 ppm dose of ammonia and see what it's like next day. If they are zero again, and you are still concerned, put a bit of tank water in the test tube (maybe a fifth of the total) and fill it up with tap water then test that for nitrite. It is documented that if nitrite is very high, it can sometimes show a blue colour, and this dilution test is just to prove this is not happening here - if it's still zero, good. If it shows any colour other than the zero colour, nitrite is very high.

Have added the 3ppm, will see what it says tomorrow.

Hi @Sue

Have tested just now and both ammonia and nitrites are zero. Did the 1/5 tank and 4/5 tap water and tested for nitrites and also zero.

So can i safely assume i am cycled?

Yes, the tank is cycled.

The dilution test was just for a remote possibility to make 100% sure  :)

well done, good work now for the fun bit

*Remember you can add more ammonia before the big water change if there is a delay to your fish arriving.

Well done - and hope you're not tying yourself in knots with the fish decision-making!

Definitely tying myself in knots. Going between a female Betta sorority, 3 or 4 Fancy Goldfish or a tetra and cory tank at the moment, or something else for the 125 litre tank. I am very undecided. Soft water will reduce the field, but not much.
