Title: Cycling fish tank 10 days in tet figures not really moving
Post by: Tommo on April 05, 2014, 10:05:21 AM
Hello all, just after some advice as to wether this is normal. 10 days in to fishless cycle of tank, ammonia level has remained at 3 ppm and nitrIte level staying at 0.25 ppm for last 6 days. Tank is set at 28 degrees, ph is 7.2. As reading other posts regarding cycling people have had ammonia level drop by day five and nitrIte rising above 2 ppm where as mine seams stagnant. Should I just be more patient or is there something else going on?

Cycling times are very variable. When I did a fishless cycle last year it took 13 days before I saw any drop in ammonia. I've heard of it taking a few weeks for the ammonia to do anything, I'm afraid.
If you want to spend some money, you could try Tetra Safe Start (nothing else) and see if that helps. It does have the right species of bacteria but whether it works or not depends on how it has been handled since manufacture. Other than that I'm afraid it's just wait.
