Cycling and confused

Hi all,
Okay, so we're now on week two of our tank cycling, the ammonia is still rising to 0.24ppm before we change the water, no sign of the nitrite doing anything, that's constantly a reading of 0ppm.  Our nitrate is currently 4.00ppm, PH 7.8.  Yet our tank, which started to clear a little last night, was almost perfectly clear this morning, is this normal when cycling?

I think I ought to add that, beside the albino convict and the firemouth, we have three moss balls and four snails.  The snails are two red onion nerites and two that were sold to us as 'long nose snails.'

Thanks in advance for any advice or answers.   :)

The water will clear. A bacterial bloom is caused by bacteria that live in the water column and feed on organic matter. They multiply very quickly, and we can see them as the cloudiness. Once they have consumed all their food, they die and the water clears. These are not the bacteria we want to grow in the filter.
New tanks contain lots of plastic things and plastic things contain plasticiser, an organic chemical that feeds the bloom bacteria. Uneaten food is organic as well.

Your readings are typical for a fish-in cycle. The fish are making ammonia but there are no ammonia eaters yet to remove it so you are having to do it. There is no nitrite because there aren't any (or only a tiny number) of ammonia eaters to make it. The nitrate reading is constant because there will be sme in your tap water, and there is no nitrite or nitrite eaters to make more nitrate.
It does take a while to get the bacteria started. The source is your water supply and some water companies are better at killing bacteria than others.
You could try getting some Tetra Safe Start. That is a bottled bacteria that does seem to work provided it has been stored correctly since manufacture.

One thing in your favour - the filter bacteria do grow faster at higher pH.

Thanks Sue, we got a bit confused because obviously the cycle couldn't be over, and we hadn't expected the water to just clear as it has.  Your reply has set our minds at rest, testing and water changes shall go on as normal.   :)

I was worried about over-feeding, but the food I put in doesn't last anywhere near 5 minutes, and the convict likes to hunt about in the gravel for any they have missed.  I tend to feed them twice a day, though they try to convince me they are starving every time I pass the tank lol.

Good to hear that our high pH will be helpful.

Thanks again Sue.   :)
