checking filter Eheim 2213 - query re priming filter again

I have an Eheim 2213 external filter (should mention that I am a newbie only had the tank 1 month and just finished fishless cycling). Anyway, the filter seems to be making quite a bit of noise but I have heard from several sources that it should be very quiet (that's why I bought it!) I would like to check the impeller but I am not sure how to prime it again afertwards. The instructions say not to fill the filter with water before priming but I don't know how else to do it? Can anyone help please. Thanks :-\

According to the manual there are three ways to prime the 2213.
With a bulb you have to buy separately (part no. 4003540)
With an installation kit you have to buy separately (part no. 4004300)
By sucking on the tube (on the pressure side)

I think I would purchase the bulb or installation kit as I wouldn't fancy sucking the tube (though a lot of people don't seem to mind  :-\ ). You will have to clean the filter media at some point so you'll have to prime it when you do that.

Until then, have you tried tilting the filter? Although I have only internals, I have read enough to know that air can get trapped in the impeller well, often just after cleaning the media. Tilting the whole filter frees the air. Internals do this too.

Thanks for your reply Sue. Yes I have tried tilting the filter a number of times and it did expel some air but still makes a noise. I don't fancy sucking the tube now its slimey either! :P I guess I'll just have to look at one of the other options. Thanks for the feedback though.

The 3 methods that Sue provides from the manual are only relevant for the initial installation of the filter.  Once you have it installed and running, you need to follow the other instructions
Quote from: Eheim
Important: When the filter media need cleaning or changing and the filter is taken away from the aquarium, please note the following points
  • The filter must have no water in it when reconnecting to the aquarium.
  • The pressure hose to the spray bar must be drained of water and the tap (if fitted) left open.
  • After connections are made the tap on the suction side can be opened (it holds the syphon). Water will flow into the filter expelling all air out of the spray bar, eliminating air locks and ensuring a perfect prime.

If you don't have the manual, you can get a PDF version from here: Manual

Thanks Steve, I missed that bit  :-[

Having only internals I don't really know the ins and outs of externals.
