I've just helped a neighbour (new to fish) who had followed my advice and has started to complete a fishless cycle. They called to night asking if i would check their water etc and see how things are progressing. Well i tested the big 3 and all coming in at zero. I tested again still zero... confused.
I got them to tell me what they had done - all ok, adding small amount of Kleen Off, using a filter start etc.
I was really confused until in caught a glimpse of the Kleen Off, it was for sinks and drains and was SODIUM HYDROXIDE not amonia,. thank god no fish were involved.
Anyway emptied the tank, washed the substrate, soaking the wood and rinsed stones. Have re-filled the tank and starting again, hopefully all that is lost is time.
Might be worth bearing in mind when advising new peeps about cycling - there is more than one version of Kleen Off. I would hate to see fish getting burnt.

Yep, absolutely. Kleen Off is a brand name (Jeyes) so it is indeed vital that people know to look at the label to ensure they are buying Ammonia (Ammonium Hydroxide on the label of mine from Homebase).
Lucky escape, and a good catch too.

Eek - well spotted WW, I didn't know that and will keep it in mind for the future.
I also didn't know that KleenOff is Jeyes.... brings back memories of washing my wellies when I worked on a farm in the summer hols many, many years ago.

Perhaps I'd better amend my fishless cycling thread with a warning :-\ I'm thinking of rewriting it now that I'm doing a fishless cycle myself.
My bottle is labelled "Jeyes Kleen Off Ammonia multi-purpose household cleaner" I've just looked on ebay and it's still the same. Interestingly, the first item to come up when I searched just "kleen off" was "KLEEN OFF AMMONIA HOUSEHOLD CLEANER - FISHLESS AQUARIUM CYCLING" so someone knows what people want it for.
-
Lol it will be in a 250 ml bottle soon labelled fish less cycling and will cost £9.99 ...
Now there's an idea...
-
.... I think you're on to something there. ;D
-
looks like we've let the cat out the bag now, someone else will pinch the idea
-
Warning put into fishless cycling thread ;D
-
excellent, better to be safe than sorry :)
-
I've also mentioned it on another forum when Kleen Off ammonia was recommended ;D
-
There is a whole range of Kleen Off products out there waiting to catch out the unwary :-\

I've been 'talking' about this product in that thread :) I suggested that he puts the fact that it's pure ammonia and useful for fishless cycling in the item title to make it easier to find on eBay, and then I found it easily.
