Will this work as a filter?

A small plastic bottle with lid on. Turned upside-down. Small holes made in lid. Lid end of bottle covered by a foam sleeve. Airline inserted 2cm above lid. Bottle filled with ceramic media. Base of bottle with small holes in. Help up right and attached to wall of tank. Airline connected to air pump.

I'm asking because I did add some mature filter media to the bottle but I'm still getting nitrites showing up. This is supposed to be a make do filter until the new one arrives.

Lots of people seem to use this kind of diy filter judging by the number of on-line videos on how to make them. It is just a pop bottle version of an air powered box filter so it should be fine.

The sponge filter I bought from ebay was complete tosh and my request for a return on the basis of misrepresentation led to a pile of excuses from the seller. I finally had to lodge a complaint to ebay, I got a refund today. I'm waiting on delivery of the same filter I have in my shrimpery. I was hoping the mature media would have more effect and I'm disappointed by the results which is why I asked. Ta @Sue

That's an unfortunate situation to find yourself in when sorting out a fry tank. You don't need hassles like that.

I probably should have let nature take it's course but as I only have 1 mature pair and because I'm not sure if I'll be able to get anymore, I wanted to try and expand the population asap. It'd be easier if I was at home as at least then I could make frequent water tests and dose the water with seachem prime as soon as the levels went above zero. At the moment I do it once a day early afternoon and get the son to recheck it in the evening. Roll on Thursday night!
