Hi all, just noticed my tank is running at 29.5oC and i cant turn my heater down any lower. my room temp is 27 so its never going to be cooler at this time of year anyway but is there anything i can do or should i be concerned? it normally runs at 23/24 so thoughts id ask just in case its causing an issue.

Cheers

It is not an issue as long as the weather behaves like typical British weather and gets cool again in a week or two. If you are worried, there are things you could try.

Leave the lid open and arrange a fan to blow across the surface. This cools the water by latent heat of vapourisation.
Turn the lights to a minimum as they emit heat and will make the water warmer.
Do a water change, refilling with cooler water than usual.
Fill some plastic bottles with dechlorinated water (dechlorinated in case they leak), freeze them then put in the tank one at a time. Once they've melted, refreeze.

Edit: see later post re frozen bottles

I wouldn't worry too much... Wimbledon starts tomorrow!

I wouldn't fill a plastic bottle. It may split as the water expands below 4oC. Partially fill it, and be careful after it has thawed out.

i use the frozen water bottle quite often in my tank and it works a perfectly - leave about of empty space in the bottle when filling with water and i neve had one burst on me yet.

If the bottle was filled with conditioned water it wouldn't matter anyway would it?

I should have been more accurate; fill a bottle almost full with dechlorinated water and freeze it.

Since plastic pop bottles have been known to crack from over use, that is the reason for using dechlorinated water in them.

It's not leaking into the tank that would be a problem, even if it's still got chlorine in it, the small levels involved are unlikely to cause your filter any problem.

The problem with a split bottle is that when you remove it from the tank, the water falls all over your nice new wooden floor.

Something I should have said re the frozen bottle method - be careful not to cause big temp swings using these. When the bottle goes in it can drop the temp quickly. After it has thawed, the temp will rise to very high again. Smaller bottles are better than 2 litre ones, and they need to be replaced as soon as they have thawed. so the temp doesn't rise again.

This is why it was last on my list!
