Title: Tank stand sizes

Hi guys

Looking into possible getting a bigger tank to replace a small one i have. It will either be 60cm or 80cm long. Most stands i see are 60cm x 30cm, but i have seen some tanks 35cm to 40 cm. Silly question i know, but is having a overhang a big no no?

If the tank overhangs the stand even by 1 cm there is a big risk the tank will crack.

The way round it is to get a thick slab of wood or plywood - at least 2.5 cm thick - and cut it slightly larger than the tank. Put that on top of the stand, and the tank on top of the wood. The wood/plywood needs painting with some sort of waterproof varnish. Plywood especially will separate into layers if it gets wet regularly.

Sometimes the stores do offers on tanks + stands. It might be worth looking into this option.

Best to get a stand to fit the tank. If it’s a standard sized tank there are stands made for it.

Thanks for the replies. I have a large desk which a tank could go on, the end of the desk with the drawers under which should be the strongest bit. Decisions, decisions.

Remember that every litre of water weighs 1 kg, then there's the weight of the tank itself, and the substrate and the decor. Add it all up then find someone (or two or three people) who weighs the same and get them to stand on the desk and jump about a bit. If it looks a bit creaky, don't risk a tank.

I recall seeing photos previously which did have some desks, and have managed to find the thread at https://forums.thinkfish.co.uk/general-fishkeeping-chat/larger-tank-possible/  If it were me, and you're referring to any of the tables/desks in the photos in that thread, I definitely wouldn't risk anything more than 30L on those - fine for one person to sit on for short duration but not the permanent weight of a tank.  If you can find the manufacturer's info for the desk you're thinking of, it may mention maximum weight capacity.

Anything flat pack tends to have a very low weight threshold FYI

Think it best to get a proper fish stand for the tank. Although some of the makes of tanks dont have their own stands, sure i can use one form another make. Now just to decide which tank to go with.

I'm quite surprised im being allowed another tank, but got a very small one that i said i will get rid of, and the boss agreed. Cant have have too big, 60cm or 75cm at most, between 54 and 105 litres.
