Title: RO water and breeding CPDs
Post by: hilly on December 01, 2018, 03:44:09 PM
Hi everyone. I'm really keen to start breeding Celestial Pearl Danios. I've currently got a 125 litre community tank that I'm using a 50/50 RO/tap water mix to bring the hardness and nitrate levels down so I can keep a few varying types of fish. Now, if I breed fish some would possibly be to sell on privately or to my LFS.

Simply my question is: what mix of water should I use in the breeding tank? Should I start same as the main tank while they lay eggs and fertilise and then get it back to normal so the fry stand a greater chance of surviving the change to possibly 100% tap water?

Not really sure which option would be of greatest benefit.

Any help as always greatly appreciated.

I'll start by saying that I don't have any CPDs, so have no experience with keeping or breeding them.

However, I would suggest that you use the same mix of RO/tap water in the breeding tank as the fish are used to. Have a chat with your LFS to make sure that they will take any offspring, it might be easier for you to know that all the fish can go to one place, and check their water parameters. Personally, your idea of acclimatising the fish to tap water seems to make a lot of sense. I'd say that this would have to be done very slowly, and not immediately after birth. I have no reason why I think this though, but it feels as if it would offer the fish the best chance of surviving the move to the LFS.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but best of luck, and please keep us posted on this project.  :)

Thanks for your input little fish. It seems logical to me too I was just unsure incase there was just some hidden flaw in my otherwise perfect plan! Lol

Although speaking to my lfs first makes sense. The only reason I started using RO was due to my water being like liquid Rock and nitrates at the maximum permissible. 40ppm. So I suppose my adjusted water is somewhere near that of normal.

Thanks again.

My sympathies are with you for your water.
Mine is similar, 17dh and nitrates at 40ppm.
I do have some tanks with fish suitable for hard water, and use an RO/tap water mix in other tanks, but I only use about 20% RO.

When did water stop being just that? Lol

I read that the nitrates problem is due to the run off of fertiliser from agriculture etc.

Might get worse after EU restrictions are rolled back in March/never! 😂
