Disaster! Today I managed to break one of the glass covers on my aquanano 40 tank.

Does anyone know of any cheap glass cutters? Or maybe plastic would be better.

There should be plenty shops that cut glass, even B&Q. The problem would be the edges. Your broken lid would have bevelled edges to stop you cutting yourself, and places like B&Q cut glass to go in windows so they don't need smooth edges. Maybe try google, or even yellow pages and ring round a few shops see if they can do smooth edges.

Perspex is an option. The lid on my 25 litre betta tank broke (it was cheap and nasty  ;D ) so I repalced it with a sheet of perspex. It works fine as a lid, it's just very prone to getting scratched. I got a 2 ft square perspex greenhouse pane from my local diy shop and cut it with a stanley knife.

I found some Perspex at work today and cut to size. It's not perfect but will do for now. Cheers for the suggestions Sue I'll give them a look.

Do make sure any shop can smooth off the edges of glass. My dad worked for Pilkington (as did most people in St Helens back then) so we had a lot of stuff in the house from the factory shop. We had 3 mirrors, two with bevelled edges one with non-bevelled edges and I managed to cut myself on that one more than once. Nasty stuff glass if you don't treat it right.
