Hi Guys.

I'm assuming most of you have used the community creator on thinkfish.co.uk and I was just wondering about the selection of filter options. Internal and External...now, I know it sounds pretty simple to understand what this means but I have a Marina Slim Filter S20 which is internal but has 4 cartridges hanging on the outside of the tank. Now, I assume this means it is classed as an internal filter but as there is a large part outside, I am confused on whether it is somehow between the two.

Can anyone shed any light? I am quite curious :)

Hi Jemworld, welcome to the forum.

The Marina Slim Filters are "internal" filters. As far as I understand it the difference between internal and external has more top do with the filtering capability of the filter rather that the actual location. Internal filters tend to be smaller and therefore do not offer the same filtering power as external filter.

I bought a Marina S60 tank which came with a S15 filter, I added a Fluval FU2 filter on a colleague recommendation. In the community creator I use "Oversized Internal" as I can in theory filter twice the volume of my tank.

I'm sure more experienced members in this forum will be able to give you more details or even correct my if I'm talking nonsense...

I've always treated hang on back filters and trickle filters in the lid as being internals. As Etienne says, externals have a huge amount of filtering capacity compared to inetrnals, andHOBs and trickles have smaller filtering capacity like internals. The only advantage they have over internals is that they don't take up space inside the tank, meaning the effective volume of the tank is slightly larger.

Thanks very much for your responses.

I had been thinking along the same lines as my filter is rated just about for the capacity of my tank so I knew it wasn't overly powerful. I had been using the internal filter option on the community creator even though some people told me mine was external. Good thing too or I might have overstocked it.

Thanks again  :)
