My husband and I are working on getting together a second aquarium and were considering doing a DIY filter and I was looking into a DIY inline heater (love Joey on youtube - https://www.youtube.com/user/uarujoey ) Any thoughts?

Welcome to the forum!

Our more DIY-oriented members on the forum will be much better placed to answer your query than I am able to but, in the meantime, hello.

In the meantime, out of interest, what fish do you have in your first aquarium and what size do you plan the second aquarium to be and with what potential stock ultimately?

Welcome along, it's good to have you here! I look forward to hearing more about your DIY exploits. I watched the video you linked to, I'm now a subscriber to that guy, I am very jealous of his capability (and the spare cash he obviously has to be able to indulge in the hobby to such a degree!) and I was shocked to hear about his poor stingrays... What a tragic occurence thanks to a relatively cheap component... I'd have sued the manufacturer...

Anyhoo, I hope you enjoy the forum, see you around!!!

Hi foreverlearning, welcome to the forum.

I want an inline heater when I eventually get around to upgrading to an external filter.

I'll look at the video when I have a bit more time.

I look forward to hearing how you get on.

I've heard horror stories about inline heaters going wrong and frying fish - but that could just as easily happen with regular heaters.

I bought an inline heater for my tank - 'Hydor External Aquarium Heater Eth 16mm Hose, 300 Watt'.

My thinking with this, as with all equipment for my tank, is that I'd rather pay a little more for reliability and peace of mind. That, and I don't trust my DIY skills  ;). It's the reason I chose to get a fairly cheap pressurised CO2 system instead of doing the homemade version; less hassle. Depends how much you can spend and how good your DIY is.

As Cora mentions in-tank or inline can both fail. I would do it to reduce the tank clutter rather than reliability but both are good reasons. Just remember the inline will be dependant on the external filter running for the heat to get into the tank, obviously this should run constantly but its is a second consequence if your filter ever fails.
