Title: Gloves for use in fishtank?
Post by: fcmf on April 05, 2018, 08:51:48 AM
Does anyone use gloves for when they're tinkering with the fishtank or doing water changes? I had some pairs of long plastic ones (a bit like clingfilm) in the past but, even sealing the top of them (with a hair bobble/scrunchie) didn't stop the water leaking in. Grateful if anyone can provide any suggestions of what they use. Obviously, I would steer clear of ones with a powder-like substance in them to avoid problems for the tank inhabitants. [I've got a deep cut on my finger which is not healing, and plasters slide off as soon as I get them wet, so it would be good to have some gloves for this and potential future scenarios like this.] Thanks.

When I was pregnant, I used decorator's gloves. They only came to my wrists, so I had to avoid putting my hands too far in the tank. But that was ok on a temporary basis because of the vacuum I have. I just couldn't do any significant aquascaping.

Gloves intended for food preparation are good too.

Possibly also quite useful should you ever need to put your hands up a cows bottom.   ;)

Need to, want to... it's a fine line.

 :yikes:

I've never used gloves for anything... fish tanks, gardening, putting my hand up a... well we won't go there will we?

I just use standard household gloves (marigolds or similar).

Aren't marigolds usually perfumed or something?

I don't use gloves for fish tank maintenance, and I've never stuck my hands up a cows anything (honest).
I do usually use them in the garden though, unless it's just for something like planting seeds/seedlings.
I can see why you might want to wear gloves if you have a cut/plasters on your hand though.
I quite like having my hands in the tank, having the fish investigate, or actually nip in the case of the tiger barbs, shrimp running over your hands.... ;D

I once bought a pair of shoulder length pond gloves to use in the tank, but they were very thick and I couldn't feel anything through them so they are just sitting in the glass shed (ie greenhouse that's used for everything).

I now don't bother using anything even when I have cuts. I did panic on one occasion when I sliced my hand on the edge of the reflector, but that was more because of the blood pouring into the tank

Thanks, all. Unfortunately this cut is so deep that it stings upon contact with water, so gloves are definitely needed. I'm hoping that the ones I've opted for are thin enough that I do feel what's through them; I followed LF's link (thanks, @Littlefish), so they're the same as those but the ones I ordered are coming from the UK rather than China so ought to be here by early next week.

The conversation over dinner:
Mrs FCMF: Eventually, I reached the 21st century today and opened an e-bay account.
Mr FCMF: Oh?
Mrs FCMF: I had to buy some aquarium gloves due to the cut on my finger. Hopefully they'll do the job as they come right up to my shoulder.
Mr FCMF: Aren't they the ones used for putting an arm up a cow's..?
Mrs FCMF: Don't - I'm eating my dinner, but yes, references to that have already been mentioned on the fish forum several times.

@Sue, what on earth would Mr Sue think about all that bacteria ending up inside your cut?  ;) You're correct - the reflector leaves a horrible gash as I've had a couple of cuts from those in the past.

I don't tell him  ;D

Though to be honest, I do wait till any skin damage has scabbed over before putting my hands in a tank even if it means doing a water change a day or two late.

Haven’t noticed any perfume or talc on the gloves I get. I do wash them copiously before use.

I have to use gloves because i have a suppressed immune system due to a biological drug i take for severe arthritic problems.

I use these and they are great and have experienced no problems at all' maybe because it's the colour but it don't seem to spook my fish at all.

Does anyone use gloves when using there test kits?

I dont but after having a read of the warnings I am starting to think I perhaps should!

I don't use gloves for test kits. I have a chemistry degree from 40 years ago and gloves in the lab were unheard of back then. If I didn't contaminate myself with something nasty back then, using test kits without gloves is no worse.
But that doesn't mean I slosh the reagents round, I am careful not to spill anything or drip it on my skin. And I do wash my hands carefully afterwards - just like in the lab 40 years ago.

The warnings are there because they have to be by law. Like the leaflet you get with medicines, they have to list every possible side effect, and reading them can be quite scary.
