Title: Fish tank 'disinfectant' type cleaner
Post by: fcmf on September 16, 2015, 05:46:28 PM
I'm sure I've asked something along these lines before but am having trouble locating the response.

Just to be certain that I've eliminated anything potentially contagious from the QT, I'd like to give it, the filter, the couple of silk plants I'd added, plus the nets I'd removed the fish with, an extra thorough clean. I'm probably going to discard the filter media (sponge and filter wool). What are people's views on aquarium disinfectant type products such as Interpet's Plastic Plant & Ornament Cleaner? I do have Melafix - given that that is actually more a disinfectant than a remedy, would it be of use in these circumstances?

I haven't come across that Interpet product so I know little about it.

When my last but one betta died of lymphocystis I sterilised everything in the tank to be on the safe side then fishless cycled it before getting another betta. I can't remember exactly what it was I used but it would have been either cheap basic range supermarket bleach, the thin stuff that costs less than £1 (no perfume, detergents etc) or baby bottle sterlising solution. Supermarket own brands are cheaper than Milton.
After using these you do have to rinse very thoroughly then rinse with water overdosed with dechlorinator. It is worth soaking things like nets and silk plants in over dechlorinated water for a few hours to allow it to penetrate into the fabric.

This is probably over the top, but I was happier doing that than risking another fish in the same tank.

Thanks, Sue.

I've actually got some Milton - great for removing tannin from teacups/mugs - so will use that, followed by thorough rinsing, further rinsing with overdosed dechlorinated water, followed by overnight overdosing soaking in the dechlorinator.  Over-the-top sounds good for peace of mind.
