External Filter Help.

My wife to be has surprised me with an early Christmas present.
A Juwel Rio 180.

I want to run an external filter system but I have no idea what I am looking for.

Any recommendations towards a specific brand or what to look for would be much appreciated.

Elsewhere on this forum (I've forgotten who it was) someone was talking about the JBL Cristalprofile and saying how pleased they were.

I've seen others, on other forums, highly recommend the same brand.

I have this one in my Amazon basket waiting for when I have the time to set it up.

I have seen the JBL filter recommended elsewhere as well.

Other brands I've seen recommended:
Eheim - good but expensive. The quoted flow rate is the real flow rate (other brands quite the flow rate with no media inside and as soon as you put media in the flow rate drops)
Fluval - good but expensive
All Pond Solutions - cheaper but not as robust. Assume the real flow rate is half the quoted value.

Well, that was easy lol thank you both.

The jbl does look good, I've had a look on a few websites and the feed back is good.
Well priced as well, we'll inside my budget.

Eeeek so excited ;D
The stocking possibilities are nearly endless!  ;D

Hi, I think it might have been me that recommended this external filter. I've had it running for around 5 months now and I'm very pleased with it! :)

First hand experience is always good to hear  :)
How big is your tank?
A couple of customer reviews have said that the air flow isn't great towards the higher range of the recommended tank volume.

It's a 180 litre Juwel Rio (same as Sue's, I think).
I don't have it on full flow and my plants are all waving slightly, so i think it's about right.

It's very quiet and it doesn't clog up like an internal filter, so I'm really happy with it.

Having said that, I didn't really do any research – I got it free with a subscription to a magazine, so just used it anyway. If I had to replace it though, I'd go for the same make and model. :)

Just for accuracy (and to be picky  ;D )

It's a 180 litre Juwel Rio (same as Sue's, I think).

My 180 litre is a custom built, ND Aquatics tank. I used to have a Rio 125 though, which is how I know about their filters.
And I know how to remove the built in Juwel filter as I removed mine.

But I am following this thread as I think my tank would benefit from an external. I just have to persuade my husband that I really would be careful to seal one properly and not cause a flood.
Until then I could do with getting an old internal out of the cupboard and running 2 internals.

That's great, I think I found my external filter  :)
I won't be able to pick one up until the new year as work is chaos at the minute. But as soon as I get one, it's game on :)

Sorry Sue, I knew the descriptions Juwel Rio and 180 litres applied to you somehow, but I'd lost track of the fact that they were different tanks! :-[

It's just me being picky  :) I didn't want people getting confused if I mentioned the dimensions of my tank and someone with a Rio 180 thought I'd measured mine wrong  ;D

[For the record, my tank is 107cm long x 45cm deep x 45cm tall. That does come to more than 180 litres but the glass is 10mm thick so the internal volume is 200 litres. Deduct the air space at the top and you end up with roughly 180 litres. Juwel tanks' volumes allow for the air space so their quoted volumes are the amount of water the tank will hold - though you still have to deduct the volume taken up by the decor etc. The dimensions given for the Rio 180, which include the glass thickness, air space and the hollow under the floating base, give 207 litres]
