External Filter for Marina 54

Hi there,
I was just after some advice on the best external filter to use with this fish tank.

I'm thinking of upgrading the standard one that came with it (Marina i110 filter).

Because of the lid, I suspect it may cause issues but unsure...

Many thanks in advance.
Craig

If this is the lid you have, are those holes at the hinge point big enough to feed tubes through? If not, are you willing to modify (ie cut holes into) the lid?

Someone will be along to give you ideas for an external filter as I don't have enough knowledge to give an educated answer. I'd imagine you'll be asked some more details ie tank capacity, what you intend to keep in it, stock level wise...

It depends how big the tubes are really?

The holes on the hinge aren't big enough at all unfortunately, they barely get the cable through from the light! haha.

There are only a small few different diameters of tubes used in filters and the diameter is crucial to the quoted flow rates for each individual model. Once you choose a filter you'll be able to Google the spec and hopefully find out how big your hole(s) would need to be.  :)

I presume you want an external so you have less equipment actually in the tank? For 54 litres I'd imagine there are a multitude of externals you could get, although I don't know what sort of flow rate you require. As I say someone should be along soon, good luck!

Well I'm thinking an external will be better to start with.

It will also allow me to put slightly more fish in there according to the community creator on this site.

And yes, less in the tank too. :)

I think most externals have quite wide tubes, so it would mean cutting holes in the lid to accommodate the inlet and outlet tubes.

I know that an external would allow you more stocking, but have you thought about a better internal? One that doesn't have carbon/zeolite cartridges? There re quite a few to choose from that have just sponge or a mixture of sponge and ceramic media.

Whatever you decide on, don't forget to put the current media into the new filter and add the new filter's media to fill in any spaces. After a few months you'll be able to remove the old media and fill up with the media that's meant to go in the new filter.

Adding extra fish to a tank requires more thinking than just the power of the filter. Make sure that you are creating a true community, where the fish will really get on with each other.

The Marina 54 is the same tank as I have. I also have the Marina i110 filter but added in an old, similar-sized filter that I had as well - the Marina i110 has a waterfall effect but didn't circulate the water surface much, whereas the addition of the second filter which provides good surface movement means that the two complement one another. It also means that one of the two filters can easily be removed in the event of an emergency / need to set up a quarantine tank without any faffing and swapping of media in what is often a stressful situation. Obviously, it does take up tank space but, because both are quite small, neither actually takes that much space away from the fish - in any case, my containers of limestone rock actually sit underneath each which serves the additional purpose of keeping the filters in place and stopping them from sliding down.

As for space for cables, there are 4 slots - two on each side of the back of the lid. The heater, the filter and the light use up 3 of these 4 slots, leaving one spare for another cable. It wouldn't be enough space for anything larger than a standard cable, though, otherwise it would be at risk of squashing it unless a hole were drilled.

In the i110, I've replaced the existing cartridges with sponge media. It was causing a problem when I was needing to medicate and so needing to remove the existing cartridge to get rid of the carbon and effectively doing a mini-cycle, as also would have happened any time the cartridge would been needed to be changed if it was on the verge of disintegrating. Where the filter wool attached to the plastic surrounds of the cartridge, I cut as closely to the joins as possible and so retaining as much of the filter wool as possible (quite a tough job so sharp scissors were required), then scraped off all the zeolite and carbon pieces from the filter wool, and wrapped this filter wool around some new sponge, before inserting this into the slot where the original cartridge had been. After several weeks/months, I eventually discarded the filter wool as the sponge itself was well impregnated with bacteria from the filter wool. Therefore, both filters have sponge media, and either can be removed in the event of needing to use one in a quarantine tank in an emergency.
