Hi all,
Having lost my first fish last week, I have come to the conclusion that I should have a QT tank ready to go if the worst were to happen and I had to isolate a sick fish. However, I'm limited by space and a wife who has no interest in another tank in the house!
So whilst I'm not able to have another tank I wondered if it would be okay to use a food safe storage bin instead. This could double up as a place to keep my fishy paraphernalia when not being used to isolate fish. I was think a storage container of at least 25l capacity, with a lid. I figure that the opaque side would reduce my ability to view the fish, but may reduce fish stress? I have a spare Fluval U1 filter, a heater and several ornaments. I've read conflicting advice on whether to use real or fake plants and would not use a substrate unless the fish really needs it.
Does anyone see a major problem with this idea or have a similar setup?

I can't see a problem with that. You could keep your F1 running in your main tank so that it is always ready to plonk in to your QT when needed. I think you might have to be careful with the heater. There are some made for small plastic tanks that might be suitable. Interpet make a little immersible pad heater, but I think it is only for very small tanks. Perhaps one of those 'Really Useful' boxes might do?

Cheers NM, that's exactly the type of box I was thinking of. I have two heaters and will check to see if either state they work in a plastic tank.

I think the danger is when the hot part of the heater comes into contact with a plastic box; it'll melt it. But lots of people use those plastic storage boxes as emergency tanks.

Thanks Sue. I'm guessing I could securely attach the heater to a ceramic tile and place that in the box. It would form a good barrier between the heater and the box and hopefully protect it.
