Title: AQUAEL fan filter mini plus. Help please to customise
Post by: Fiona on March 20, 2015, 07:07:07 PM
I want to customise this filter so I can use some media from another filter and would appreciate some help and advice.

The filter contains is a big black coarse sponge and it has a central bar that draws water through the sponge via slots in the front of the casing. I'm a bit stumped as to where I'd put the ceramic media and also where I could put finer filter wool

The website doesn't say anything about the sponge being impregnated with carbon, always a possibility with black sponges. I've never seen that 'inlet tube' idea before (looked at the manual). But it should be easy to customise if I understand it correctly.

Would it be possible to cut up the sponge into several bits? Then place a layer of filter wool where the water would flow through it last, and sandwich the ceramic media between two blocks of sponge? With the ceramic media sandwiched you wouldn't need to put it in a bag which could be tricky if that inlet tube goes right the way through the sponge. But it would mean taking it apart very carefully when cleaning so you didn't lose any bits. If you wanted to use a lot of ceramic, just use two thin layers of sponge to keep the bits in place.

Thanks Sue, I gave it a go and so far so good. The current is a bit slow now even on max setting, it barely ripples the surface but as there's only Frank and a nerite in the tank, I'm hoping the plants will oxygenate the water sufficiently for their needs. Frank seems happy enough in there, I noticed yesterday that he's actually made himself a bubble nest under the amazonian frogbit, always a good sign so I understand  :)
