advice needed re: Rena cube tank

Hi
I bought a Rena 100l cube tank on eBay a couple of months ago - long story short - offered it to a neighbour for her goldfish.  She's just bought a new tank so given it back (unused!).
It has a used Rena Flow 400 pump, a very long sponge (unused) and 2 possible carbon(?) pouches in the large 3-part corner filter area.  The seller suggested I replaced it with a small canister filter.
Any advice would be appreciated please.
Thanks in advance!

I have failed to find that filter anywhere! If this is because it an obsolete model it might be worth getting a new filter in case the Rena is so old it doesn't work properly.

But you don't need an canister (external) if you don't like them, there are plenty of internals that are suitable for 100 litres.

Thanks Sue.  I don't know much about filters being a relative newbie.  Are there any you would recommend for a 100l?  Money is tight but obviously I want to make sure the fish will be ok!  In my fluval edge there's sponge, carbon & biomax.  This fishtank only has the carbon & the foam so do I need to add anything else e.g. similar to biomax?

You can replace carbon with biomax or sponge, whichever will fit better in the space available.

I am a fan of Eheim filters. I have an aquaball in my 50 litre tank and a biopower in my 180. Both come in sizes suitable for 100 litres, though they are not the cheapest brand around. Fluval are also a good make, the U series being the one to look at - though don't use the poly-carbon pads.

...and I can vouch for the Fluval filters, having had one which lasted for 12yrs before a small part inside gave up (which I could probably have got a replacement part for). It was the predecessor to the 'u' type but the new/'u' type was fine too, and gave more options with waterflow - it'll probably be the u3 or u4, if Fluval were the brand you went for.

Thanks fcmf - I'll have a look at the fluval filters too.  :)
