Moss balls

Moss balls were amongst the first plants I got for my tank when I set it up 5 years ago. Now they have grown so big that they just don't hold together any more so I am going to bin them when I can bring myself to. In the mean there are about half a dozen moss lumps threatening to take over my tank!

I just wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience with moss balls.

I bought one in petsathome when I first added plants about 5 weeks ago.
To be honest, I thought they were a bit like "pretend" plants but after a few weeks the other half said to me "is it my imagination or has that thing grown". I'd been thinking the same.
Anyway, I took it out of the tank and it did break into 3. I rolled the largest bit back up and used a little fish line to keep it a ball. One other bit I made into a small ball and the last bit I sort of flattened and attached to a small rim of broken plant pot using fishing line again.
It is growing fluffy on that bit and the other bits look fine.
I bought another one the other day because they look so good in the tank

Just to note that "moss" balls are not actually moss but a form of algae.
To  keep them in a ball shape you are supposed to move them about from time to time, rolling them over so that they rest on a different side each time.

I used to roll mine around when I did water changes. I guess that's how they lasted so long. I don't think any amount of rolling would help them now. It's obvious they centres have grown hollow.

You could probably just tear them down and rebuild them as multiple balls. They aren't any special form of algae, just Cladophora (Blanket Weed) I believe.

A Selection of Fish in my Fish Community Creator Tanks

The strip I attached to a small bit of a clay pot rim is growing fluffy and still looks good. No sign of dying off.
Haven't killed that at least!

The newly rolled balls likewise have survived.

Oooer missus.

They really do look nice in the tank.
Actually, me and the other half have considered just having some in a tall vaselike glass with glass pebbles in.  Seen it somewhere
I think in (Japan?) they are a symbol of good luck or something and often kept like this

Sanjo, did you dismantle a moss ball and put it on a pot? How did you fix it? I am considering alternatives for my moss balls.

I didn't so much "dismantle" it Helen, it just broke into three bits, different sizes.

I've been reading up on them a lot lately and have decided that I am going to do a mini "garden" in a jug like they show in the net.

I took the middle sized bit and gently flattened it.  It was only the rim of a small pot so I used fishing line to wrap around the moss to attach it.

It still looks good (green, fluffy and healthy) but yesterday I took it out of the tank and where it wasn't caught by the line another little bit lifted up. Pushed it back and tucked it under the fishing line again.

I doesn't appear to "grow" on the pot rim like say Java moss would but the fishing line can hardly be seen, especially since it's fluffed up a bit and it makes a nice green interesting shape in the tank, and goodness knows I need something interesting since there are only plastic fish in it. !
