Java moss

A couple of bits of advice please.

We  only have a small 21 litre tank which is currently cycling and now that the plants have given up the ghost the only thing still going is the moss ball, which does in fact seem bigger than when we bought it.

I am interested in playing with some Java moss, since it is apparently difficult to kill.
Has anyone bought any from Ebay.  What would I have to avoid.

I did find a seller but there were many choices of Java fern and I wouldn't know which would be best in this little tank (if at all).

All comments much appreciated.

I have sharp gravel and no substrate so plants don't "take"

You mention both java moss and java fern. I have managed to kill the moss  :(

But I can grow java fern quite well - it is in all my tanks. Java fern is grown attached to decor as the rhizome will rot if planted in the substrate. I have it attached to anywhere I can manage to fit it. I tie it with cotton thread to hold in in place till it attaches itself; other people use things like elastic bands.
There are small species of Anubias which are also grown like this, and I can manage not to kill them too.

Java moss is also grown attached to things, from a rock to sections of plastic craft canvas. Since I manage to kill this plant, I'll leave its care to someone else.

Oh at last one I can comment on :))

I have both Java Moss and Fern in my tank. So far I have had to trim moss by half its volume on 2 occasions in last 8 weeks it grows like a weed not sure how you killed it Sue :)
I allowed this to grow to the side of the bog wood which stops it moving around tank and it has formed a sort of ball shape. I believe it could get out of hand in a smaller tank but seems not to suffer severe trimming as I said.

I also have the fern partially on my bog wood from new plants grown from the initial leaves I purchased and now the large piece of bog wood can hardly be seen. Only had tank since end September.

Sanjo

Ferns (Microsorium sp.) should be quite easy to grow in your little tank.

I know PAH in Basildon and also Swallow Aquatics have bits of bogwood with them already attached, but they are quite expensive.

I've sent you a message.

Thanks Sue, nice to know I'm not the only one who can kill a plant!
Thanks Mad_BMS. It was the fact that I had seen comments on the net that the moss can be invasive that I needed reassurance.

Many thanks Naughty Moose. Have replied. Much appreciated

Hi Sanjo, i purchased my Java moss from ebay, there are lots of fake and similar mosses so make sure you get the right one, or google them and go for something else : ) You don't get a great deal, but its enough to start with, it came with small mesh but i tied mine to bogwood, and another tank to pebble, one doing great the other looks a bit brown and fluffy  :-\

Thanks AM. That's one of the sites I looked at but then I couldn't make up my mind.

Sue I do tend to get my ferns and my mosses mixed. Not difficult with a brain like mine.
You kill duckweed!!! Blimey. You're worse than me !!

Duckweed is a high nutrient loving plant and tends to die out if nitrates are low and so killing it might be a sign of good tank management  :)

Ooooh, didn't know that!

Since my nitrates are very low from the tap and never get terribly high, that could account for it.
