Fertilizer – ooh arr!

Hi,
I've just purchased some plants for my tank. They are easy-growers for beginners. One is Amazon Sword (which i have already) and the other is Hydrocotyle Leucocephala. I intend to use this last one as a floating plant, so it won't get the benefit of the root tabs in the substrate. The seller has advised me to use TNC Lite for this plant which, he says, is OK for fish and invertebrates, and which can be used alongside the root tabs.
I just wondered if this is right. Is it completely safe as recommended, and does anyone have any experience (good or bad) with this fertilizer.

Ta,

Diz :)

I have this plant in some of my tanks. It grows really well, but will try to climb out of the tank if it grows strongly! I never use fertilisers for any of my plants. Floating plants should be able to get what they want from the water, including using up some of the nitrates that originate from your fish. My advice would be to try the plants without fertilisers and only use them if the plants don't grow strongly.

Great, thanks Richard. I don't blame the seller for wanting me to buy this, but I'm wary of just tipping stuff into my tank for no good reason. Will try it without as you say. :)

I considered using TNC Lite a while back when my tank was fairly immature and I didn't seem to be getting great plant growth but I didn't bother in the end. I bought a fairly large batch of stem plants at one point and did add a few root tabs to help them establish but haven't added anything since and my plants are doing really well, including the java fern, java moss and floating plants which obviously didn't benefit from the root tabs. I'd just say to give the plants time - some may take a while to get going and others may die back a bit before returning. You will get the odd one which just doesn't take as well but it doesn't hurt to keep trying different varieties  :)

I think you're right. The 'wait and see approach' is what I'm going for now. Thanks for the advice. It's good to know that giving the plants a bit of time to become established might be all that's needed :)
