Title: Honey gouramis with Glowlight danios?
Post by: KayFe on July 26, 2017, 09:20:19 PM
I have a 61L tank with 8 glowlight danios and 5 phantom tetras. I've never kept honey gouramis before and wondered how a pair would get on with my little community. What do you think?

Should be absolutely fine.  Ensure you get healthy looking gourami that have been in store for a while.  There are a few poorly fish out there. I can give you more detail if you want but don't want it to necessarily put you off.  They will make a great centrepiece fish and add some personality to the tank.  Gourami also need access to a layer of humid air above the tank so dont work well in some tanks like the fluval edge but most tanks can provide this no problem.  They also appreciate floating plants if you can get them, if they breed they will lay a bubble nest between them.  You should look to get a male and female pair, definitely not two males as they will fight.

I don't have personal experience of keeping gourami but perhaps others might know whether the modified pelvic fins (long feelers) might be attractive to black phantom tetras who can be fin-nippy? Additionally, gourami are comparatively slow-moving, especially in comparison with glowlight danio, so you'd need to consider feeding regime/tactics carefully to ensure that they aren't outcompeted for food.

I've tried inputting this into the Community Creator and, deducting 10% of your water volume to account for decor (etc), this would put you at 100% stocked. Personally, I wouldn't want to risk this as I think it's better to have some "wriggle room" in the event of unforeseen circumstances such as inability to do a water change, water company/quality problems and power cuts, but some people are happier to take these risks.

I wouldn't. I've had both glowlight danios and honey gouramis in the past and my danios were just too lively for sedate gouramis.
If it was my tank, I would increase the phantoms to 8 and then consider the tank full.

Actually, I also checked it on community creator and it said the tank would be up to 50%. I forgot to point out that I have external oversized filter. Thank you for your replies, I will give it some more thought...

I've just glanced back through your previous posts. Do you still have the separate, larger, 75cm tank with the pygmy and panda cories? If so, and you didn't add shrimp to that and just still have the cories, then it's a possibility that the honey gourami could be housed in that tank. [If you do have shrimp in that tank, then it wouldn't be a wise idea to house gourami in there. If you let us know how many tanks you have, what volume and footprint they are, what inhabitants are in each, etc, it might be that something can be worked out to your satisfaction, potentially with a bit of swapping around of stock between tanks.]
