Title: What fish is this
Post by: brecon on November 27, 2012, 10:57:50 AM
Hi Can anyone help me identify this fish, have attached an image, have trawled all my books without seeing any, was given to me with a number of other fish. Have got four and would like to get some more as they look great. Has white tips to the dorsal and anal fins. Very pretty when it catches the right light Thanks

I was going to suggest an emperor tetra, but don't think it looks like the photo in the fish database.

My other suggestion is a black neon tetra. I have seen these in the fish shop and don't think they looked like the photo on the fish database.

It might be worth googling pictures of both of the above. This is how I eventually identified a female cherry barb that I adopted. Because she was quite old, she didn't look like any of the fish in the fish shop or most of the photos that I found. But after finding one helpful photo, I bought some more to keep her company and eventually couldn't tell which was the one I'd adopted as all the females looked the same.

Hi Brecon, looks like a white spot tetra as all the same markings, they are a nice looking fish, but I have never seen any for sale at my local shop,

Hi, thanks for the info Helen and Skull, I must have been in about 12 different lfs searching for these guys, so I guess just keep looking. Sadly the person who gave them to me is no longer with us. I wanted to get some more, as I only have 4 and they look as though they would look good as a shoal of ten plus. I will try and upload a better image but they are quite quick so i will just have to trying.

Thanks again

I think it's a Silvertip Tetra, Hasemania nana. It doesn't have that much colour because it's probably a female and also I think getting on a bit.

EDIT: I've just noticed that it appears to have an adipose fin. In that case, I think it's unusually pale-coloured Gold Tetra, Hemigrammus rodwayi. If it doesn't have an adipose, I'd still go for Silvertip Tetra though.

Hi Anna,

Thanks for this, have been trying to find some of the Gold Tetra in a LFS for ages but nothing appears to be around, I did buy a few of the Silver tips the other day as I thought they would look good and they do and they are shoaling nicely, so it looks as though I will just have to be patient and hopefully find the Goldie ones eventually. I was given 4 but would like to get the number up to twelve. They just have a great colour when the light strikes them. I will have to look a bit further away from my home, but have always had a self imposed rule about not travelling too far with fish, and am very nervous of online buying and delivery by post/courier.

Thanks again
