( I have yet to get my ownfirst aid kit! ...see previous thread of mine)

My bristlenose plec seems a it anxious since I added the treatment...have I done something wrong?

Hi!!

don't worry about your plec at this stage they do go a bit manic when you first put treatment in. He should calm down within the next 24 hours ( probably less but i'm giving you a slightly wider window!!!)

Turning the temp up is not something i'm familiar with but if you read it on here its bound to be good advice. The only thing i would check is that you haven't made it too hot for any of your fish. This could be contributing to your plec being anxious too.

thanks for advice!

as a new fishkeeper I'm obviously anxious as I'm unfamiliar with their behaviour .. will keep monitoring and keep fingers crossed he's just being skittish ...he does seem to have calmed down now (12.30) but we'll see.

I wondered about the temperature .. I read somewhere it should be turned up to 30 degrees as it slows down the whitespot infection, but I know that's too hot for my plec as well as the others, so I've just turned it up a couple of degrees to 27.

 :)

The higher temp speeds up the whitespot parasite.

It is a three stage bug.
The first stage is the spots on the fish. They eat the fish's tissues and they are protected by a covering. The meds can't get at it in this stage. Once they've eaten enough they drop off the fish.
The second stage is where the bugs lie on the bottom of the tank (or anything else they landed on) and multiply, still within the casing. Again, the meds can't get at them.
Stage three is where the casing splits open and lots of 'baby' bugs go looking for a fish to infect. This is the only stage where the med can get at them.

Increasing the temperature increases the speed of this life cycle so they all get to the stage where they can be killed faster.

Because of these three stages, you need to continue treatment as the med instructions say. There must be some active med in the water when the very last bug reaches stage three.

You can increase the water temp by 1 deg C every 24 hours, and the same cooling down once the treatment has finished. Make a note of the setting on the heater before you turn it up!
This temp increase is only temporary. Your fish will cope for such a short time. It can get up to 30 deg during a heatwave in summer.

thanks ...will continue to increase temp as instructed  :)

my plec Molly has stopped behaving erratically, but is now hiding under his log!
I can't see any spots on him though at this stage.

How long does the cycle last .. eg. how long do  I have to go on medicating?
The King British treatment I'm using says every 48 hours whilespots are visible, then 48 hours again after they've gone.
then do a 10% water change

Is this OK?

dont forget to remove any carbon filtration if you have some as this will remove the meds from the water.
heat treatment should continue for 10-14 days to prevent reinfestation.

And once the treatment has finished, do a bigger than 10% water change, more like 50% if you can manage it and put some new carbon into the filter - or a separate cheap filter kept just for that. The big water change will remove half the med and the carbon will get the other half.
