White Fluff On Fin

Hi all,

I have an established tank and last week added 5 Angel fish. All the Angel fish and the others appear fine, however, I’ve noticed a speck of white fluff on the side fin of one of the Angel fish right next to his body. I’m fairly sure it’s not ich as I have experience of dealing with that & think it could be fungus. I’m loathed to treat the entire tank (220l) which leaves me three options; do nothing & just keep an eye on things, move to my smaller 54l tank  (treat that instead) or place in a small quarantine tank & use some of filter from the main tank pump (hasn’t been used for ages). My preferred approach is just to keep an eye on things but obviously am concerned others may become infected. Any suggestions are welcome.

I would also suggest just keeping an eye on things to start with. But do more water changes that usual as clean water often sorts things out without the need to medicate. Should it become necessary to treat the fish, use whichever tank has no other fish in.


Do you have opaline gouramis in the same tank as the angels (looked at your signature)? These are among the more aggressive gouramis and the fungus could be an infection setting into a wound caused by being nipped by another fish - and here I would place gouramis as number one suspect. You would need to sit quietly and watch the tank until the fish forgot you were there to see any aggressive behaviour as it often stops when the fish are distracted by a 'food provider'.

Yes we do have Opalines & one is definitely aggressive although this is usually to the other one. Thanks for advice Sue which I intend to follow.
