Starve days - are they necessary?

morning all,
I've been reading up on feeding fish lately and I've come across differing ideas about whether or not it's necessary to starve your fish for one day a week.
The pro-starve camp argues that it's a necessary part of any feeding regime because, in the wild, fish aren't able to get food every day. This is supposed to be particularly important for Bettas and, as the new owner of a very handsome Betta, I'm keen to keep him (and my other fish) as healthy and happy as possible.

The anti-starve camp argues that fish do get food every day in the wild and therefore it's unnecessary and cruel to starve them.

Without coming over all Hamlet, I just wondered what the general consensus from forum members was: to starve or not to starve? That is the question.

Small fish should be fed every day, some argue twice a day. By small, I mean neon tetra sized. But large fish like some big cichlids (oscars, severums and the like) don't need to be fed every day.
If you do decide to feed twice a day, feed half the amount you would feed once a day each time, not the same amount.

Thanks Sue, I think I'll continue to feed once per day then. Everything seems settled in the main tank (water and fish-wise), and I don't think I overfeed them :)
