Neon Tetra acting strange!! SOLVED.

Hey guys. One of my Neons is acting a bit strange! It is making flicking movements near the top of the tank and has a bulging belly. It is a female and I've had her for 10 weeks. Only noticed this about 30 minutes ago. Did a 20% water change at 2.30pm. Any ideas or advice would be gratefully received. Thanks so much.  ???

Are there any other symptoms, for example, you say her belly is bulging but do the scales also stick out?

There are 3 causes for female fish to have bulging bellies - dropsy (the sicking out scales), eating too much at one go or egg bound. If her scales are not sticking out and you hadn't fed the tank within the previous couple of hours, that leaves just option 3. And I'm not sure what to do about egg bound females other than let nature take its course - either she'll reabsorb the eggs or lay them.

My neons had problems with ulcers which are normally hard to spot untill its too late, but they do tend to gorge themselves and can look very uncomfortable indeed for a few hours after - what's the latest state of play?

Thanks for your replies Sue and Matt. Things have settled down now and I think she may have eaten a bit too much at tea time! No scales sticking out thankfully. Think I might give them a fasting day tomorrow! Thanks again for your help.  :fishy1:

Try some blanched chopped peas instead, they love em and they'll help get things moving  ;)
