Title: help poorly fish
Post by: Jwc on March 08, 2016, 09:43:09 PM
hi hoping someone can help me quickly. i have a zebra danio thats swollen up and its scales are all standing right up. ive read it could be dropsy and that can spread quickly. can anyone think it could be something else. im on the verge of taking it out if its contagious, im not keen on euthanasing it so would put it into a bowl as it seems lively and happy.

That definitely sounds like dropsy, especially as the scales are sticking out. Do you have eSHa 2000 or any other medication which claims to treat this or bacterial infections? If so, then I would treat the fish in a separate tank (NB take any carbon out of the filter if you do this). From personal experience, though, moving a fish to a small bowl/container without a filter in it won't keep them alive for long (a few hours at most), so if you don't have a spare filter for the hospital tank, I'd leave the fish in the main tank as my understanding is that dropsy isn't contagious.

Its unlikely to survive if its reached the pinecone stage. Have you had it a long tie or is it a new fish?
