Title: Help me name common fish diseases
Post by: brian c on May 08, 2015, 02:21:59 AM
This may seem like an odd request but I am really getting mad because almost every time I buy from petco I get ich. Even though I can see ich in the other tanks I always remain loyal to petco because I think that the next time will be different... I have yet to see that come true.:( So I am now planning to find out the common dieses and buy the bottles of medicine for them.

Ich is actually the most common disease brought in by new fish. Most other diseases can be traced back to water quality lowering the fish's immune system. And ich med is really the only one you need to keep on hand. Don't forget that meds have an expiry date and should also be replaced when the bottle has been opened a year as the oxygen in the air that gets inside makes the active ingredient go off.

Do you have a quarantine tank or do you put the fish straight in the main tank and end up treating all the fish? If you put them straight in, getting a QT would be a good idea, that way you only have to treat new fish that get sick and a smaller tank won't use as much medication.

The problem with seeing ich in other tanks in the shop is that they likely use a central filter system so the water flows through all the tanks taking the parasite with it. In theory they should use UV on this system which should kill any water borne bugs but even if they do use one they might not maintain it properly.

I use a qt tank,of course. You'd have tp be crazy,a newbie, or a cheap skate to not have one. Which I am none of them.
