Title: Fat Zebra Danio
Post by: Murf on October 29, 2012, 12:02:02 AM
Been getting plump for a while now but over the past couple of weeks it has really ballooned up.  Any ideas?  Don't overfeed and its the only ome of 4 danios to be fat like this.

Hi Murf

Are the scales protruding from the body....like a pinecone ?  if so,  suspect it's dropsy. I used to have zebra danio and never seen one that big, even with eggs.

Agreed ive never seen one that big either. Is she still eating normaly? Have you seen her poo at all, its a long shot but if it is constapation try feeding some mashed up cooked peas with the shells of.

No protruding scales, already checked for dropsey so I've been thinking it might be constipated.  Been thinking of squeezing her very gently as you would a chiclid for eggs etc.  Afraid of harming her though.  Gonna try the peas first though as she is eating ok.

The danio is still fat if not bigger than ever ... peas didnt work :( Thinking euthanasia?

Is the danio behaving/eating normally? If it is, then it is up to you whether to euthanase. I only say definitely yes if the fish is obviously suffering. You can see the fish, you'll know if it's time. Do you know the methods?
It is possible it has a tumor or some other blockage, but the only way you'd find that out is by a post mortem examination.
