Title: Black spots? Advice please
Post by: Dylan5084 on December 12, 2015, 03:11:13 PM
So I've noticed some black spots on the dorsal fins of my silver dollars, and I don't know if I'm being paranoid,  but they're on the dorsal fins of my male guppies as well, I've searched for black spot but they all say the spots appear on the body.... Help please

The spots on the dorsal fin in the photos don't look like anything wrong to me.

There is a thread on another forum concerning the ID of 2 adopted silver dollars and the chap replying on that thread - a fish expert - stated that there are 28 species assigned to the Metynnis genus but there are only 14 actual species, some of the 28 are the same species as others. But that still leaves 14 any of which could be sold as silver dollars.

Looking at your photos I would suggest that perhaps you have a species which has black spots in the dorsal fins.

As for your guppies, there is a huge array of different colours and patterns, and a lot of them have black spots in various fins. Do you have any photos of your guppies? And yes I do realise how hard it is photographing fast moving fish  :)

Lol,  I will try my best but the spots on my silver dollars have never been there before... I'm not sure if there maybe just maturing.

Completely unsure about the spots on the guppies but I'll try photographs

I'm not convinced my guppies have it,  and none of my other fish have it... I'll keep an eye on them

Sounds like they've just matured to me, I had a similar issue with my penguin tetras developing white streaks and tips on their fins. Whilst my Kribs and otos had no sign of anything out for the ordinary. But it is best to keep an eye on them, as you say, just in case something else develops.
