TDS includes more than GH.

GH just measures divalent metal ions. In practical terms, this is mainly calcium with some magnesium and trace amounts of other metals.
TDS measures everything. Divalent metal ions, mono and trivalent metals ions, anions, non-ionic substances. And it includes things we add to the water such as dechlorinator and plant fertiliser.

Using TDS rather than GH is better as it measures more.

Well that sounds promising LF. Does that mean that I will only need to use a product such a Prime to get rid of the chlorine and chloramine before I can add it to a tank?
Sorry, I've only just noticed your last post as I didn't see the new page, duh. I have noticed though, that most people seem to use, as you did, degrees dH so when asked by someone what my hardness is, how should I answer them? ppm or ppm converted to dH.
Thanks again.

For hardness, both ppm and dH are used. Some fish profiles use one, some use the other. You need to know the hardness in both units.

I would not use Prime. They won't say what's in it ("trade secret") but considering the things they claim it does, it's a chemical soup. Everything we add to a tank gets inside the fish so the less we add the better.

Does your water company use chlorine or chloramine? If they use chlorine, the best dechlorinator is API Tap Water Conditioner. That contains only two things, thiosulphate to remove chlorine and EDTA to bind metals. It is also very concentrated. For chlorine the dose rate is 1 drop per US gallon (3.75 litres)

Those dechlorinators which contain some thing to 'stimulate the slime coat' are also not recommended. Most contain aloe vera which coats the fish's gills. Others contain polymers which do the same.

Thanks Sue, all information is now stored in memory to be regurgitated as and when necessary. It's a complicated business this fishkeeping lark, lol. (tongue in cheek)..

That's for sure Sue and although I did keep central American cichlids for quite a few years, that was a long time ago (over 15-20 years), and now at age 66 I am finding that my memory doesn't function as it did back then. Most of the info I have been reading recently doesn't reaffirm what I already thought I knew and I am having to re-educate myself with all the updated information. I'm reasonably confident that I will manage to not make any massive blunders because of sites like this, none of which existed when I last kept my cichlid tanks.
Anyway, thanks again Sue; I have no doubt that our paths will cross in the not too distant future.
