Frozen Fish Food.

Hi All.

I'm probably going to sound like an idiot here. (Nothing new then!).  ;)

I've just bought some frozen fish food for the first time and it doesn't come with instructions. How do I feed it to my fish? I googled it and some say just "bung it in" frozen and others say defrost it first. Now I don't know what to do.

What do you lot do?

Many thanks in advance.  :)
Ian.

I have a small measuring jug which I fill with tank water and then drop the frozen food in to 'defrost' and separate first before pouring it back into the tank. Some are quite happy just to drop some straight in the tank and then let the fish tear it apart as it defrosts but this isn't my preference.

I also find that they go quite a long way - I only use half a cube at a time for my tank which is 180 litre and well stocked (although many of my fish are still quite young so I may be using a full cube by the time they're all fully grown).

Thanks dbaggie.

That sounds like a good idea. I have four tanks, so splitting the cube (or maybe two cubes) between them seems a good plan.  :D

No worries - I had the same problem when I first started using frozen! You pretty much always find instructions on dried fish foods, but not on the frozen for some reason  :o

Bear in mind that the cubes contain a lot more than you'd think. The first time, I'd be inclined to cut one in half. If there's not enough then defrost a bit more.

It's when there are fish in the tank capable of swallowing a cube whole that it is a very good idea to defrost first - so that all the fish get some and that the greedy fish doesn't end up with a lump of ice inside it. For smaller fish, they will pick the defrosted bits off the outside. If like me you want to split half a cube between several tanks, defrosting first is essential.

Thanks for that advice Sue.

I defrosted one cube of Daphnia yesterday afternoon and shared it out between my three tanks with fish in. (I am currently cycling a fourth tank). That seemed about the right amount.

I think I will always defrost them. My Pearl Cychlid is big enough to swallow a cube whole, so I won't risk it.
