Title: Feeding Vegetables
Post by: IainA on May 15, 2014, 11:42:56 AM
Hello, can anyone advise me the best way to feed my fish vegetables, primarily as a treat. I have tried cucumber and courgette, but these just float on the surface and the fish appear not interested. On the other hand I have fed them defrosted skinned peas and these go down a treat. I have also read that you should perhaps cook the veggies first. Any views?

for the cucumber it needs to be waited down so that it sinks to the bottom,i bought a device of ebay called a screwcumber there basicaly a giant stainless steel corkscrew just forced it up the inside of the cucumber and drop in the tank and remove later what they havent eaten.i will let someone alse to comment on the cooking as i have only tried the cucumber in my tank so far and that was uncooked.
the screwcumbers was only a couple of  pounds of ebay but iam sure you could find something in your local lfs.

Blanch the veggies first to soften them. I find 1min in the microwave or with some boiling water out of the kettle is fine. I weight the courgette down with a lead strip from a plant I bought. Take it out after a day so it doesn't foul the water.

Courgette is more nutritious than cucumber. My husband refuses to eat courgette, so when I had fish that enjoyed it I just sliced it up and froze it. When defrosted, it didn't need cooking.

A stainless steel teaspoon will do for weighting courgette/cucumber. Though check first that it's not the best set  ;D

My fish love a bit of cucumber but haven't tried courgette or peas as of yet - will have to give em a try.

Thanks to everyone for their most helpful comments. I am fairly new to fishkeeping, 9 months now, and wasn't sure whether to post here or on the Newbie section but very pleased with your responses, I'll certainly be trying out your ideas. Thanks again.

I've not fed my fish veggies yet, but apparently is good variety for Tiger Barbs so I think I will give it a try.

How small do you chop them?

in 40 plus years i have never fed tiger barbs veggies
they might have a nibble on a floating blanched lettuce
leaf you could puree some Vegetables and place it in some
ice cube molds and freeze it and feed it that way might get
messy if they dont eat it
