Title: Feeding carnivorous Plecos - How?
Post by: Evolution Stu on June 24, 2016, 01:39:47 PM
Hi folks,
I have a few cat fish in a tank with Corey's and Eartheaters. All South American.

The plecos are a green phantom and a queen arabesque.

How do you guys go about ensuring the plecos dietary requirements are met in a tank full of greedy bottom feeders?

I have the usual Algae tablets which I place as strategically as possible before lights out, same with slices of courgette. But I wonder about a protein for them.

The food is always gone next day, but who ate it?
Any feeding advice will be very greatly appreciated.

Are these plecs nocturnal or diurnal? if they are nocturnal, the simple answer is to to put food in for them after the tank and room has been dark for a while. If they are diurnal, it's a bit trickier, short of using some device to place the food directly in front of the plec.

I use long forceps to feed bloodworms to my dwarf puffers.
If your plecos are quite sociable and are often found out and about, you could use forceps to put food in front of them.

Thanks for the advice,
These guys are definitely nocturnal, you never see them around.

I tried after lights out last night, gave them all an hour to calm down and find their beds then popped some stuff in with a long grabber device I bought.

It's all gone this morning, but who knows who ate it? Lol

Night vision, underwater, motion sensitive camera. That's what you need.  ;D

Hmm.. I could fit it to a little remote controlled submersible and swim around with it.

Ha ha. Don't tempt me. Lol

Presumably you're also aware of catfish pellets designed for omnivorous fish eg Hikari sinking carnivore pellets?

Not bad I think mate.
Ive bought all manner of wafers and the like, including some nice JBL stuff for carnivores.

Ive also been creating little snacks I pop in after dark... like this.

Its always gone in the morning, and no signs of sunken bellies so I "Think" its going ok.

Thanks folks... I can't promise all will be perfect, but I won't fail due to lack of effort that's for sure.
