Which tropical fish are livebearers

Fish which give birth to fry rather than lay eggs are called livebearers (https://forums.thinkfish.co.uk/livebearers/). There are two broad types of livebearers - common and rare.

Common livebearers are available almost everywhere. They include
Guppies
Endlers
Platies
Mollies
Swordtails.

Details of these fish can be found in the Fish Profiles (https://www.thinkfish.co.uk/fish-profiles).

Rare livebearers are less commonly available. Some shops may stock them, but the usual source is from local aquarium societies or on-line shops. Rare livebearers include
Goodeids (see Fish Profiles)
Halfbeaks
Heterandria
Gambusia
Limia

When breeding livebearers, it is not advisable to keep the female in a small box as she will become stressed. It is much better to allow the female to give birth in the main tank. Provided there are several plants, either real or fake, there will be enough hiding places for the fry although some will inevitably be eaten.
