Title: tanganyika dwarf cichlids (Tank Setup)
Post by: daveyng on September 04, 2019, 04:57:21 PM
I’m considering setting up my tank for tanganyika dwarf cichlids. I am considering Fairy Cichlids (Neolamprologus pulcher), Lemon cichlids (Neolamprologus leleupi) and Julidochromis species. I am also considering Shell Dwellers.
Has anyone on this forum ever setup or kept any of these smaller Tanganyikan species.
I intend to use sand as a substrate with an abundance of rocks.
Water is ‘rock’ hard out of the tap so fine for these cichlids.
I have seen recommendations for small frequent water changes (I do this anyway). Change will be 50% p/w approx.
Any thoughts ?

No experience here to be honest. I do know shell dwellers are pretty easy to keep (the look fascinating too) and they will breed readily too so might be worth not stocking too heavily on these to begin with.  Also place rocks directly on the bottom of the aquarium (put in first, rather than on top of sand as the shell dwellers digging and substrate rearrangement habit will likely topple them else). On the topic of overstocking, I believe it is right to overstock these fish (obviously this is within the filtration capacity etc... maybe it's a poor choice of words but it seems to be the chosen lingo) to minimise aggression on any one individual... I assume this also applies to dwarfs... worth some research. Im certainly no expert, this is just all i can think of that might help you from what I have seen online etc...
