Title: anyones experinece on mixing cory types?
Post by: suzie61 on September 08, 2018, 08:36:54 PM
Just wondering if anyone has experience of whether different corys will shoal together (I realise one rule does not apply to all!).. Just curious???
Specifically thinking of pandas and salt n peppers - quite different looking but maybe they don't notice (its not all about looks you know!)

I've not mixed cories in any of my tanks, but looking on some other sites/forums, people seem to be saying that they've not seen any problems, as long as there are several of each type.
People seem to be indication that as long as you have at least 3-6 of each species, then they will be ok.
What sort of numbers were you thinking about? How many do you have room for?

As Littlefish said you do need several of each species. While single individuals of several species will group together it is only through desperation rather than them naturally grouping together.

I have since read the same on line. so I may stick to the pandas and build up their numbers as space allows!!

Wise choice, I think - and the pandas seem to be a bit more robust than the micro-sized cories such as salt and peppers / habrosus, pygmies and hastatus for whom it seems to be even more important to keep in larger numbers.  Looking forward to seeing pics or, better still, videos of your pandas as I adore their group behaviour as though on a mission to comb the substrate together and leave no stone (or, more accurately, grain of sand) unturned.

I think it's a good idea to increase the group size. Pandas are lovely.  :)

I will try to figure out video! Watching them eat bloodworms is not so pretty - half of them filter straight through!  :o
Yes, I love watching them, they might all be sitting motionless and one will suddenly shoot off for a snack or a quick nip round the tank and back to "napping" again! So different to other fish
