Does anyone know why photographs at the bottom of a post sometimes appear upside down but when you click on them they are the right way up?

For example, marquismirage's photos in this thread https://forums.thinkfish.co.uk/general-fishkeeping-chat/the-pre-project-project/

@Sue I would guess the the original image has orientation data attached to the image that rotates images when viewed on a pc. When the picture is attached to a post this information isn't attached and it gets displayed in a standard orientation So it it was taken in a different orientation the water falls out the bottom of the tank :)

@Sue , I take it we're looking at the pictures in reply #11 (2) and #18?

Firstly @marquismirage, is there anything "odd" about the pictures on your camera/phone?  Did you have to do anything with orientation before you uploaded them?  Were there any problems with the upload?

There's definitely an issue with browsers going on here, and possibly with how the website handles uploads.

In all the browsers I use (IE11 on my HP W10 laptop, Safari on my iPad and Internet 3.3.38 on my Android phone), the 1st thumbnail in #11 is upside down, the second is 90o CCW.  In #18, that thumbnail is upside down.  As the way all 3 display is the same across all 3 browsers, it leads me to think that there may be a problem with how the web-site displays jpg images.

As you say, the orientation changes when you click on the thumbnails, the 1st image on #11 is the right way up, the 2nd image on #11 gets rotated 90o CW and the image on #18 is the right way up.  Except for IE11 where all the images display with the same orientation as their thumbnail.  Thank you Microsoft!

@Andy the minion, this would lead me to think that the orientation data is being stored when images are uploaded.  It's just the website and IE11 not using it that's the problem since Safari and Internet are seeing and using it and the only place they can get that data is off the image stored on the website.

The weird thing is that 2 images I uploaded on 7th January (The Emergency Room / Unexpected Demise) has 2 images that display correctly, thumbnails as well as clicked-on images, in all my browsers.

@adenann I agree, I realised after I posted that the orientation information must still be in the file itself or it wouldn't display correctly when viewed. Probably the differences between picture originate from the way the camera was held when they were taken.

They were taken on my phone camera.  Orientation looks correct on the phone and on the download to my PC via One drive.  No problems with the upload.  After it was upside down last time I turned the phone the other way but with the same result.
