Unable to see signatures

Hi,

Should I be able to see other peoples signatures in posts?  All I seem to get it there post comments and nothing at the bottom.  I've been using the CC and wanted to see if my proposed fish appear at bottom of each of my posts, but not getting anything on mine either?

Hi there,

The signatures used to appear in each post, though it got a bit unruly and took up a lot of space, so now the signatures are shown in the individual users profiles.

I can see signatures underneath my own and other people's posts. If you can't see any, the first thing to ask is what device are you using? I am using a laptop, Windows 10 and Waterfox.

For example, Littlefish's says "MTS and TTC (total tank chaos)"
Mine gives my two tanks, and what's in them.

That's interesting @Sue and it didn't occur to me that others could still see the signatures in each post.
It also didn't occur to me that not doing so may have coincided with a new laptop.  :-[
I'm such a doofus at times.  :)

What operating system is your new laptop? And which web browser? I know that Microsoft Edge had problems with smileys on the site at one time, for example.

I've tested the following:
Windows 10

# SIGNATURE NOT WORKING
Chrome Version 68.0.3440.106 (Official Build) (64-bit)

# SIGNATURE WORKING
Microsoft Edge 42.17134.1.0
Firefox 61.0.2

Looks like it a Chrome issue, I'll dig into the code when I have a few mins and see if I can identify the specific element which is failing on Chrome browsers.

Thanks all, I sent a PM to @Bazza2000 on the topic. In short, it's complicated!

Usual sigs (subject to your settings) should show on most browsers but there are known issues with M$ edge.

If you use the community creator then your tank will also be displayed. However, it'll be based on a snapshot in time and not current, simply because I have to currently at least manually import the db from one box to another.

So the full display of CC tanks to all users is experimental as I need to see how this impacts server load. If it slows everything down significantly, I'll disable them, if it doesn't I'll leave as is.

Hope that helps!

This was an issue too, you're right. I made a version that showed thumbnails of the fish too, so things did look crowded. The latest version, only shows fish names and numbers and links...

Do people like this feature?

Ok, so - I've changed the display template so that if you don't have a forum signature enabled and you DO have a community creator tank, then it will show your community tank. If you don't want others to see your community tank, then you create a signature in your profile.

If you DO want your community tank to appear, then delete your signature... I could show both too...
It's a little clunky I know, and subject to feedback I will revisit it when I've some time.

Ps, I don't have a tank at home at all, so ignore my contents below ;) I deleted my usual fish and chips sig to demonstrate it in action.

I remember you did configure things so the CC showed in everyone's signature a while back but the problem was that the CC often contains wishful thinking rather than the fish we actually own.

Personally I would prefer either the signature I write or the CC but not both, and where a member writes a signature that should take priority because that is what the member wishes to show under his/her posts.

Yes I think that was it Sue and agree, it didn't work perfectly. For me, it was also a way of sending lots of link equity to the pages with a lot of search volume too (eg specific fish) in an organic way, plus of course an opportunity for users to show what they had on board.

In any case, the way it'll work for now is as described above - server load seems to be fine, so it could be a winner. For folk who update their tanks regularly and want to instantly show what they have, then this way will work (to a degree), for those that don't wan to show their sigs then they can override by creating a manual sig.

The hope is to get a relatively simple script that keeps it all current and @Bazza2000 might be able to help on this when he's back too,  which would be awesome :)

Thanks all!

I have just realised something. There is a tick box in our profiles "Don't show users' signatures" If that box is ticked, you won't see the signatures.

Profile -> Modify profile -> Look & Layout. The relevant box is in the list on this page.

Make sure that box is unticked.
