'm currently running a Aqua One Aquis Advance 1250 canister (250L) filter for my 230L tank, it is a bit of a beast, 850L/hr holds 12L of water and is a big 32W, i am very happy with it and was thinking of buying same as back up about £104 i think. but is the Wattage rather high? and can anyone recommend a good large filter that may be suitable?

I have one of these AM, Fluval  306 and it's great. Cleaning is so easy!

You should possibly get the bigger 406 model as mine is only a 200l tank  :)

Thanks WR, i have heard good things about these, i will have to look on the site and see what the L/H  etc is, i think it may be between this and a Eheim of some sort, (but they are very pricey) Is your Fluval noisy at all? that seems to be the only downside.

It's actually virtually silent, I cant hear any noise at all. It also has a valve to control the flow rate and a simple mechanism to detatch the hoses from the canister which maintains the vacuum and means you don't have to prime it everytime you clean it  :)

Ther are some decent vids on YouTube about them

Thanks, WR, i think the Fluval 406 is looking like the winner, i only have 230L tank and was tempted by the 306 at £89.95 but for the 406 is only an extra £30 so makes sense to get that  :)

I always like to read instruction manuals before buying anything, and Hagen's website has a lot of manuals including the Fluval 06 range
The download looks huge but only a third is in English!

If JBL is on your list of possible filter makes, Practical Fishkeeping are giving them away with a subscription to their magazine. http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/content.php?sid=6633

Thanks Pawel, well it was too small for my main tank but will be great replacement for the 90L, and at £50 for 13 month subcription and free JBL filter, couldn't say no  :D
