Home-made Fertilisers

Hi all,

Has anyone had any experience of creating their own aquarium plant fertilisers, specifically root tabs? I've seen various videos about how to make your own but they're generally from the U.S and the fertiliser brands they use aren't available over here (or at least I haven't been able to find them!). I wouldn't want to pick any general plant fertiliser off the shelf for fear of it containing something lethal to the fish.

Similarly, does anyone have any recommendations for liquid fertilisers which aren't going to cost the earth (that may be a pun of sorts!).

Cheers

I haven't done anything along these lines. I rely on purchased root tabs, they are generally available pretty cheaply and I am not convinced it is cost effective to make your own. However...

Take a look at this Wikipedia article. It gives a detailed list of the nutrients required for plant growth. It is aimed at terrestrial plants, but the basics are identical. Secondly, have a butchers at James Planted Tanks article on Estimative Index. This gives a source for each of the nutrients required. Combine this with your research on root tab manufacture and bob's your uncle.

Note: The user may not necessarily own these fish, these are tanks that they may be building or researching for stocking purposes
